BambooHR Alternatives for Small Teams Under 50

By CypressHR Team · Published

BambooHR is one of the best-known HR platforms for small and mid-sized companies, and it is a good product. If you are reading about alternatives, you probably have a specific reason: price, plan structure, the features you need, or what you want included in one place. This post lays out the published numbers, compares them fairly, and shows where a flat-priced alternative fits.

All BambooHR facts below come from its own pricing page, as of October 28, 2026. Prices change, so confirm them with the vendor before you decide.

What BambooHR publishes about its pricing

According to its pricing page:

  • For companies with more than 25 employees, pricing is per employee per month, starting at $10.25 for Core, $17.50 for Pro, and $25 for Elite, per BambooHR's pricing FAQ, with volume discounts applied automatically.
  • For companies with 25 employees or fewer, pricing is a flat monthly rate of $250 for Core, $425 for Pro, and $650 for Elite.
  • Payroll, benefits administration, and time and attendance are listed as add-on solutions. The page does not list add-on prices.
  • You can choose flexible month-to-month terms or an extended term.
  • Core lists employee records, workflows and approvals, time-off management, job posting, and benefits tracking. Pro adds performance features such as 360 review cycles and 1:1s.

That is a lot of capability, and some teams will want exactly that.

Reasons teams under 50 look at alternatives

You want a price that does not move with headcount. Per-employee pricing is predictable until you hire. A flat plan price per company stays put as you grow (extra states are $25 a month each, and e-sign is $1 per request on Pro).

You need timesheets or run several sites. Timesheets, scheduling, and multi-site support may matter more to you than reporting and benchmarks. On BambooHR's page, time and attendance is a separate add-on solution.

You want a simpler tool. Some owners do not need compensation planning, benchmarking, or engagement surveys, and would rather have fewer features done calmly.

You already have a payroll provider. If you are happy with payroll, you do not need HR and payroll from the same vendor.

If none of these fit, staying with BambooHR may be exactly right. In particular, if you want HR, payroll, and benefits administration from a single vendor, BambooHR lists all three (payroll and benefits administration as add-ons), and CypressHR does not include payroll.

A fair price comparison

Here is how the list prices line up. These are the published rates only. They are not quotes, and the two products do not have identical features.

Table: monthly list prices as of October 28, 2026, from the BambooHR and CypressHR pricing pages. Plans: BambooHR Core and Pro, CypressHR Essentials and Pro. Headcounts: 25 or fewer, and 40. BambooHR prices at 40 employees use the starting per-employee rate, before the volume discounts BambooHR says it applies automatically, so a real quote may differ. Excludes add-ons and sales tax. Not quotes. Features differ by plan. CypressHR Pro shows the $500 founding price, available through December 1, 2026; the standard price is $700 after that.

Team sizeBambooHR Core (published)BambooHR Pro (published)CypressHR EssentialsCypressHR Pro (founding price)
25 employees or fewer$250 a month flat$425 a month flat$350 a month$500 a month
40 employeesabout $410 a month (40 x $10.25 starting rate)about $700 a month (40 x $17.50 starting rate)$350 a month$500 a month

Notice what this shows. At 25 employees or fewer, BambooHR's published flat rates are lower than CypressHR's. As you move above 25, BambooHR's per-employee pricing grows as you hire, though volume discounts apply, while the CypressHR plan price stays flat. The BambooHR figures above are starting rates before those automatic volume discounts, so a real quote may differ.

CypressHR pricing: Essentials is $350 a month. Pro has a founding price. Founding price: $500 a month for companies that sign up by December 1, 2026 (11:59 PM Central). Standard price is $700 a month after that. Both plans are a flat monthly price per company with no per-employee fees, plus applicable sales tax. The founding price applies to companies that sign up by December 1, 2026, and Pro is $700 a month after that. See the pricing page.

What CypressHR offers instead

CypressHR is HR software for U.S. employers, built for owner-led companies with no HR staff. Based on the CypressHR site:

  • Essentials: a team directory with profiles, document upload for your handbook and files, an employee portal, time off with approvals, announcements, and two-step sign-in with a record of who changed what.
  • Pro (everything in Essentials plus): timesheets, onboarding and offboarding, e-sign at $1 per completed signature request, an approvals inbox for managers, goals, 1:1s, and reviews, built-in hiring to post jobs and track applicants, scheduling, private notes on employee issues, more reports and reminders, multi-site, surveys, and benefits links.
  • Free done-for-you setup: after you pay, setup includes loading your employee roster, your handbook and your time-off policy. You can also import people from a CSV.
  • Compliance reminders: a calendar for items like poster acknowledgments and handbook refreshes. These are awareness items, not legal advice.

What CypressHR does not do: it does not include payroll or benefits administration, and it is not a PEO. Benefits enrollment stays with your carrier, and Pro can link out to benefits resources. It also does not list features such as compensation benchmarking or engagement scoring.

Other directions to consider

If payroll is your biggest need, a platform that starts with payroll may be a better starting point than an HR system. Gusto, for example, lists a Simple plan at $49 a month plus $6 per person per month (basic payroll in one state) on its pricing page (as of October 28, 2026). Gusto starts with payroll and adds HR tools on its higher plans. Some teams use one vendor for both; others keep payroll and HR in separate tools.

How to decide

  1. List the five HR tasks that cost you the most time.
  2. Check each product against that list, not against its full feature page.
  3. Ask for the total monthly cost at your headcount today and in a year.
  4. Ask who sets up your data and how you can leave.
  5. Try each in a sample or demo company, if one is offered, with real scenarios.
